Re: Before You Decide To Become An Owner; OWNERSHIP QUESTIONNAIRE
Our policy at (Kennel Name) is to screen all requests for a (Breed) prior to an agreement for sale of these unique animals. Unfortunately, some of these animals end up in wrong or inexperienced hands. All of our animals are sold with a contract outlining their care; the contract must be signed prior to final sale and release of animal.
Use a separate sheet to answer the questions listed below. Do not be intimidated by the questions; they are intended to inform you of what really goes into ownership of these magnificent creatures. If you have any questions, please call or write.
How did you hear about our kennel?
Why do you want a (Breed) _______________________?
What experienced have you had with said breed?
Do you have small children? What ages? Are you aware of the fact that domestic dogs should not be allowed around small children, unless under close supervision is provided? Dog love small children. They love them so much that, in their excitement, they will jump up on them and, without intending to, can injure them severely; in many cases, they can kill. If you have children, it is not recommended that you bring them near your small child, unless the animal is on a leash, and the child is a safe distance from the animal. If you believe "your sweet dog wouldn't hurt my child", then you should not have such an animal as a companion.
Is the entire family agreeable on this purchase?
What kind of safe and humane containment can you provide? When allowed to run loose, your animal may chase, attack, and possibly kill other dogs, cats, and livestock. Remember, what they kill or damage is your responsibility.
If you do not have a pen currently, what expenses are you willing to incur in building an adequate environment? Remember, some dogs can jump 8 feet from a standstill, and are excellent climbers and diggers.
What literature have you studied regarding ownership?
Do you live in a heavy residential area? Nosey neighbors definitely will complain about barking-howling episodes, stimulated by fire engine sirens, ambulances, and police cars.
Please describe your neighborhood (nearness of other homes, what other domestic animals reside nearby, average climatic conditions, etc. ).
When you purchase said animal, you must be prepared to keep the animal for its lifetime (8-16 years) and provide a non-stressful environment. This applies even if you are to re-locate; the animal goes with you! A sudden uprooting may cause undue stress, leading to very serious maladies. Are you prepared to make that type of commitment?
Please provide the name and telephone number of your Veterinarian?
Please provide the names and telephone numbers of several references from other breeders with whom you have become acquainted.
What are your state, county, and local regulations for dog ownership? We are a reputable breeder, and follow the laws of our state to the letter.
What type of background do you have in working with and training canines?
Have you ever owned a dog before? If so, what breed, and for how long? Why do you no longer have this animal?
Are you looking for a guard dog?
Are you looking for a house pet? Are you aware that a dog happily will damage your carpet, furniture, drapery, etc. , and that severe reprimands could result in your animal losing its bond with you?
Do you have a full-time career with long hours and many out-of-town trips? Such persons who are "married" to their career are not very good candidates to own pets; dogs deserve at lease one solid hour, preferably more, of quality time each day.
Can you make provision for someone to care for your animal, in the event of an "out-of-town" emergency?
We have listed many negative aspects of owning a canine; you might ask, why do so many people have dogs, if they are as awful as this questionnaire has made them out to be? If you enjoy the affection dogs give their pack leader (you), and derive pleasure from going the extra mile necessary to provide the ultimate in care for a creature that requires specialized handling, and if you desire to erase the negative images bestowed on so many, then, this canine may be for you. Our dogs are not available to the greedy, to the macho type who wants to "brag", or for the person desiring an animal to guard his home. These are special animals, and require special people. Educate your acquaintances about the important role of this creature, and especially about the very accurate fact that these animals are not for everyone.
