THE COLORADO BULLDOG
"LOYALTY AT ITS FINEST"

The Colorado Bulldog is an awe-inspiring pet combining the size and strength of the American Bulldog with the protectiveness and agility of the American Staffordshire Terrier. This breed originated in the beautiful state of Colorado 10 years ago and is one of the fastest growing bulldog breeds, to date. Although people have bred the American Bulldog and the American Staffordshire Terrier for years, this breed first took the name Colorado Bulldog in 1992. Florida, Kansas, Michigan, North Carolina, Oregon and Texas are just a few states besides Colorado that have had the opportunity to experience this awesome breed. Through selective breeding, the Colorado Bulldog has evolved into an excellent working and guard dog without sacrificing the playfulness and loyalty of a devoted pet.
The Colorado Bulldog is an extra large breed, with a strong and powerful stature. The male should appear more massive throughout than the female. The male should be larger and thicker in bone structure with a large blocky head. The female shares the same overall look, generally with slightly less size. This bulldog has its own standards with the height ranging from 24 inches to 28 inches tall at the withers for males, and 21 to 26 inches tall at the withers for females. Although some dogs may vary in size, these standards are ideal. The weight also varies depending on gender; male standards are set at 100-140 pounds, and the females 80-120 pounds. The dog should appear very muscular and well proportioned. The head should be square with an overall box look, medium in length with a broad skull and muscular cheeks. A scissored to a 1/8-3/4 inch undershot bite is preferred. The ears remain natural (no cropping), and any eye color is acceptable. The body should appear powerful with a broad chest and blocky stature. Straight, thick muscular forequarters and hindquarters are a necessity. The tail should not be docked, but extend downward when relaxed, to the base of the hocks. The coat is short and smooth, with a sleek look, and all colors are accepted.
The Colorado Bulldog is a very intelligent dog, so training is easy for the average person, whether it be for protection, working on a ranch or just playing fetch. Appearing strong, yet spirited, the balance of size, courageousness and loyalty makes this breed an excellent family pet and protector. The dog should be lively at playtime, yet relaxed and easy going when left alone. Pleasing his or her owner is this dog's top priority. To the onlooker, the Colorado Bulldog may appear quite intimidating because of its size and strength, but, in reality, this powerful Bulldog is great with children and may be the largest lap dog you will ever own. These dogs are sure to protect your yard and guard your fence line, yet, when away from their area they are very lovable and enjoy outside attention.
Pictured above are two outstanding examples of the Colorado Bulldog owned by Todd and Gail Smith at Red Canon Kennels. RCK'S Legendary Leah depicts the beauty and strength of the female, at 106 pounds; she stands 26 inches tall at the withers. RCK's Goliath the Gentle Giant (the first ever ARF registered Colorado Bulldog) tips the scale at 127 pounds and stands 27 inches tall at the withers. In May of 2002, ARF proudly welcomed Todd and Gail Smith as the first ARF certified breeders of the "Colorado Bulldog".
