I, ___________________________________________, an ARF Breeder/Member,  pledge to the best of my ability, and as a responsible breeder, to do the following:

  1. I will seek to educate myself on basic animal husbandry.

  2. I will study by breed's standard.

  3. I will not breed my animals for popularity sake, or for conformation only.

  4. I will breed for producing animals that have a working ability, and/or, producing ability, desired temperament, and soundness of body.

  5. I will be selective in my breeding program by watching for: Any "Mesalliance" (breeding with an undesirable). "Multiple Conceptions" (two or more animals mating), "Age Disparity" (Young adults, 18 to 24 months, in good condition, are ideal.) , "History of Illness" (Severe illness involving fever can affect fertility.).

  6. I will select only the best of my animals, to keep or sell.  All others will be spayed, or neutered, or put down due to birth defects, etc. All animals shall be at least eight weeks of age before going to a new home.

  7. I will keep a record of all my breeding programs by using an ARF Record Book to record all births and sales.

  8. I will screen all requests for my breed, prior to an agreement for sale, by using an "Ownership Questionnaire".

  9. I will furnish an ARF Certified Pedigree, or an ARF Certificate of Registration, for transfer of ownership, with each animal I sell.

  10. I will provide a Sales Contract and a Health Certificate, or, upon a signed agreement, allow the buyer a choice of a State-Licensed Veterinarian to examine the animal within seventy-two hours of purchase.  If the animal is diagnosed with any physical disorder, a full refund will be made upon the return of the animal.

ANIMAL RESEARCH FOUNDATION'S
CANINE CODE OF ETHICS FOR OWNERS

Congratulations on the purchase of your four-footed, ARF Certified friend.  We know that in a very short time the two of you will have a great relationship.  However, to keep the bonds of love strong, we ask that you commit to the following:

I, ______________________________________________________________________________________________, having committed my devotion, will..........

  1. Have a clean dish from which my dog can eat, and have plenty of fresh water from which he can drink.

  2. Have a clean place where my dog can sleep -- a clean dog bed, a clean dog house.  Since my dog is a domesticated animal, I will provide my pet with a cool place in summer, and a warm place in winter.

  3. Have a good place where my dog can exercise, run, romp, and relieve himself, every day.  And, I will clean up after my dog.

  4. Have a good place where my dog can socialize with other dogs and people.

  5. Never promote the use of my pet for any harmful or illegal purposes.

  6. Make time to train my dog for work, sports, or companionship.

  7. Control myself, so as not to expect more out of my pet than he is able.  I will not abuse my pet, should he displease me.

  8. Provide good health care, and yearly check-ups, and Veterinarian care should my pet be injured.

  9. Educate myself and others about my dog.

  10. Have caring arms, should the Great Master call for my dog,  knowing that my pet was ever safe, until his last breath.

In the event that my dog should outlive me,  I will have seen that my pet is provided for in his remaining years.  It is my desire to honor my dog,  by honoring this Code of Ethics, and being my DOG'S BEST FRIEND.
