In November of 1986, Ms. Lana Lou Lane, of Rebecca, Georgia, the originator of the "Alapaha Blue Blood Bulldog" name, contacted the Founder of the Animal Research Foundation [ARF], Mr. Tom D. Stodghill, 1903-1989, in regards to preserving a rare breed of working bulldogs, that her family kept on the farm, as well as other farmers, ranchers, and stockmen, living near the Alapaha River Region of South Georgia, and other parts of the southeastern United States.  As a result of Ms. Lane's passion to preserve this rare breed, Mr. Stodghill, ARF's genealogist, accepted her plan to preserve this "old timey plantation bulldog of the Alapaha River region", or "Otto dog", as Ms. Lane's granddaddy, Papa Buck Lane, had previously called them.  However, regardless of the other names they were called, this working bulldog found its way to America, from England; as many were brought to America by the early English colonists.

However, today, this 200-year-old-plus [Alapaha] bulldog import is still the same dog, with two exceptions; the "Alapaha" name (which has only been used for the past 20-plus years), and the number of dogs that currently exist (This is why they are considered a rare breed).  With a knowledge of these facts, having been originally supplied to the public, by the ARF, from 1986 to 2008, there are now in our midst unscrupulous breeders, who have created their own privately held "Alapaha Registries", and/or web sites, to create an "Alapaha" breed fiction, for the sake of seducing an uneducated public into purchasing a "bulldog" from their kennel.  And, they have gotten away with their nefarious scheme, as Ms. Lana Lou Lane failed to trademark the "Alapaha" name.  Therefore, anyone can produce a "bulldog" and call it an "Alapaha".  However, it is left up to you, the dog purchaser, to decide if you want a true "Alapaha", or a bastardized breed that is being called an "Alapaha".  Therefore, the more rhetoric one reads or hears, one can conclude that it is to remove suspicion from their unorthodox breeding practice.

The ARF has been in existence for more than 60 years (Est. 1947), and, we have had a close association with Ms. Lana Lou Lane, up until her untimely passing in 2001.  However, part of ARF's, and Ms. Lane's, original agreement, as an ARF Certified Breeder, of "Alapaha Blue Blood Bulldogs", was that the ARF would continue on her work, in perpetuity.  Today, her legacy is being carried forth by the Foundation, and its ARF Certified Breeders.  Therefore, if anyone has an "Alapaha" for sale, just ask if the dog/pup is ARF-registered, and/or, if they are an ARF Certified Breeder; if not, BUYER, BEWARE!  To locate an ARF Certified Breeder of "Alapahas", we have a breeders' list that is available on our ARF web site, www.arfusa.com , or a breeders' list that can be faxed, mailed, or e-mailed, to a prospective buyer.  To be an ARF Certified Breeder, we require that all our breeders adhere to our "ARF Code of Ethics for Breeders", and be in good standing with our ARF Policy and Registration Procedures.  Any breeder that is found in violation of our rules, will be either suspended, or barred, from our organization.  Public Trust and Dependability are our most important products.
