The Animal Research Foundation was established in 1950 by Mr. Tom D. Stodghill, who continues to guide it.  The Animal Research Foundation is set up to help in the systematic breeding of working stockdogs, the development of new breeds and the preservation of rare breeds.  While the Animal Research Foundation is especially concerned with stockdogs, it registers all types of dogs and all types of farm livestock.

The Animal Research Foundation was the first to register Catahoula Leopard Stockdogs.  These dogs were registered strictly on their merits, by style of work and general appearance.  The first Catahoula was registered on September 30, 1951.  Today, over 7,500 Catahoula Leopards have been registered by the Animal Research Foundation, and the breed is steadily increasing.

Catahoulas are now found in many places.  They are working cattle in Hawaii and Alaska.  There are Catahoulas in Canada, and they have been taken to Venezuela to gather wild Brahman cattle on huge ranches.

Catahoulas continue to demonstrate their versatility.  In Canada, they have competed successfully in sled dog racing.  Catahoulas appeared in the movie "Home from the Hills."  They have worked with rodeo clowns to protect them from bucking bulls.  A California Catahoula has been herding sheep.  Catahoulas have worked with a professional cutting horse trainer as turn-back dogs.

Catahoula Leopard has become one of the leading breeds of stockdogs, and interest in the breed continues to grow.
